Low gas almost always means a leak — not "used up" gas

Refrigerant is not consumed the way fuel is. It circulates in a sealed loop between the indoor and outdoor units, and in a healthy system the same gas keeps circulating for the life of the aircon — it never needs topping up. So when a system is low on gas, the gas went somewhere: a loosened flare joint, a corroded coil, a pinhole in the piping.

Where the test shows the leak needs real work — a piping section replaced, a joint re-made, a corroded coil repaired — you get an exact quote upfront, before any work starts. If you decide not to proceed, you pay only the $45. Unrelated faults found during the pre-check, such as drainage or electrical issues, are standard repairs from $80.

What determines the cost when piping work is needed

We do not publish a flat price for piping or coil work because the job varies too much from home to home. The quote depends on:

• Where the leak is — a flare joint that needs re-making is a smaller job than a pinhole mid-run or a corroded coil.
• Accessibility — exposed piping is straightforward; piping concealed in trunking, false ceilings or walls takes longer to reach.
• Length of the pipe run that needs replacing.
• Joint repair versus coil work — re-flaring a connection is minor; a corroded evaporator or condenser coil is a bigger job.
• The refrigerant needed to recharge the system once the repair is done.

Whatever the answer, you get the exact figure upfront after the pressure test — no work begins until you have agreed to the price.
